Our first atoll in the Tuamotus, Kauehi, almost gave us a heartattack trying to navigate the pass and the lagoon. Historically known as the driftnet for boats, the Tuamotus has been avoided do to shallow reefs, strong currents and shifty weather. It was our favorite spot. Estrela at anchor on our first morning. The first morning was absolute still. A contrast from the horrble weather we dealt with the previous day trying to get inside the lagoon. Atolls are a serious of broken islands of coral and sand surrounding lagoons can be up to 30 miles across. Black pearl farm to the left, the main econony of the islands along with copra. We had such a hairy sail into the lagoon, we promptly went to church the next day, a Sunday. We thought the car a strange sight for a island that is 8 miles long by 400 yards wide. Last comment 11/18/08.

Unicorn fish. These guys hung around DANCYN waiting for us to stick a few for breakfast! John lured them to the surface with crackers and speared them from the dink. Last comment 11/18/08.

Cleaning the unicorn fish. This atoll had a bad problem with ciguatera and unicorn were some of the few fishes safe to eat. We gave them to Taverio and Tanya. Last comment 11/18/08.

Estrela, Kyle and Doug were out sailing around the world with their daughter's Abigail and Eliza, 6 and 9. They wanted to spend time with their children before Britney Spears and Coca-cola corrupted them. They are some of our favorite people we have met cruising. Last comment 11/18/08.

The fishing was great 'cause no one could eat the large predators due to ciguatera, a bacteria that is not usually fatal, but can be debilitating. Last comment 11/18/08.

Allison and HT interviewed Taverio on the ciguatera issue. He felt that pollution from 12-volt batteries (used with solar panels before the island got a diesal generator) and the disturbance of the coral when they built the landing strip has caused the bacteria to emerge. Last comment 11/18/08.

Taverio's skiff. Once we started bringing them gifts of fish we were like their long lost grandchildren. As he has gotten older he is less able to fish the ciguatera-free parts of the reef which are many miles away. They relyed mostly on frozen chicken and tinned beef, a shame since the fish are so plentiful. Last comment 11/18/08.

Looking at pearls. We should have bought more! At one point, there were 50-some farms in the lagoon. Now there are only 3. We found a lot of trash left over from these operations. Last comment 11/18/08.

The outer reef. Because the islands are so low and studded with coral reefs, they are very tricky to navigate around. Last comment 11/18/08.
